About Samoens - Picture the Scene
Samoens is a summer and winter Mountains and Lakes resort that makes a significant part of the Grand Massif plains. Regarded as a romantic resort - as displayed by ‘love hearts’ dotted around the village(!) - Samoens has remained relatively undiscovered, unspoilt, cultured, charming and is a truly picturesque village. Sat at 800m, it is considered an ideal family holiday destination and a get-away for those who have a passion for the outdoors.
Where is it?
At the foot of the imposing Criou Mountains and a short step from Fer a Cheval, Samoens is sat proudly in the heart of Giffre Valley, 20 minutes drive from Le Cluses, 55km from Geneva, 30 minutes drive from Portes du Soleil and 40 minutes from Chamonix...to mention a few!
Natural Beauty and History...
Samoens is a far cry from a concrete jungle that often comes hand in hand with a typical all year round alpine resort. Samoens has been awarded a coveted Coq d’Or for being one of the prettiest villages in France. Furthermore, it boasts an art-cultural authenticity; once a stone cutting centre, Samoens has preserved its historical inheritance, being the only French ski resort to be listed as a Monument Historique. With its rustic, characteristic focal points dotted around Samoens, such as the Village Church, medieval water fountain in the square and The Botanical Garden at the heart, Samoens has kept ‘true to self’. It has maintained its ancestral rural, traditional feel. With the hubbub of the Wednesday market that brings this village to life, you’d agree that Samoens is much more than a winter ski resort, it is a real community, all year round.
The Slopes...
More recently, it has been voted "The best small resort in Europe" by the renowned and well respected Hardy’s Skiing and Snowboarding Guide 2009. With excellent snow record in the winter months, and easily accessible at 1600m, Samoens is part of the Grand Massif, linked to a network of pistes, allowing extensive skiing. It is also a quick -and free- shuttle bus ride away from surrounding ski resorts such as Flaine, Le Morillon, Le Carroz and Sixt, opening you up to 265km of vast piste plains, which is about as far as the eye can see... and much, much more.
In Summer, Samoens makes a significant part of the Mountain Biking culture, with 600km of track to venture. Not only that, but Tour de France have been known to cycle through certain parts of Samoens. With the array of activities at hand and the beautiful scenery at its doorstep, this resort allows you to do as much, or as little as you like.
